Debate of Bill C-38 in the Finance Committee

June 11, 2012

Many Canadians have been watching the debate and votes on Bill C-38, and I would like to give an overview of the extensive debate this legislation received by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance.

I believe that the work done by the Committee on this piece of Legislation since May 15th – over 50 hours of discussion and debate – demonstrates that Bill C-38 was carefully considered by the Finance Committee and is ready to return to the House of Commons for Report Stage and Third Reading.

Our committee also established the Subcommittee of the Standing Committee on Finance on Bill C-38 (SC38) to allow for a more thorough examination of Part 3 of Bill C-38, focusing on responsible resource development.  This was done in response to concerns that this part of the bill needed to be studied separately.

I am confident that the study of Bill C-38 by SC38, as well as the traditional study of the bill by the Finance Committee, and in the House of Commons at Second Reading, Report Stage, and Third Reading, will result in the piece of legislation being studied in depth and debated at length.

On Thursday, June 7th, I tabled the Finance Committee’s Report on Bill C-38, An Act to implement certain provisions of the budget without amendment.  I welcome you to view the relevant proceedings from the Finance Committee’s work on Bill C-38
